Why does a variable-frequency drive have a leakage current when operating with a motor?

With the absence of a variable-frequency drive, the magnitude of leakage current is typically negligible. However, when employing a variable-frequency drive, the high switching frequency of the inverter's power module introduces higher-order harmonics into the output current. Furthermore, due to the presence of inductance between cables and ground as well as between different cables, a significantly larger leakage current (up to 10 times that observed without using a variable-frequency drive) is generated.
